Herd hosts Southern Miss

Seniors Goff, Spikes and Tinnon to be honored

From staff and wire reports

BECKLEY — The final game at the Cam Henderson Center for three Marshall seniors will present a chance at revenge.

The Thundering Herd will host Southern Miss at 7 p.m. today in a game that will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.

It will be the last home game for seniors Robert Goff, Nigel Spikes and Dennis Tinnon. Tinnon is the team’s fourth-leading scorer at 10.6 points per game and is among Conference USA’s leading rebounders at 9.3 per game.

Spikes is at 5.7 and 7.3, while Goff registers at 3.9 and 3.5.

Marshall (12-17, 5-9 C-USA) will be facing the Golden Eagles for the first time since losing 102-46 Jan. 23 in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Herd committed 31 turnovers — 11 of them by junior guard DeAndre Kane — and shot just 33.3 percent in the lopsided loss.

Marshall is coming off last Saturday’s 103-76 loss at Houston. Junior forward Elijah Pittman, fresh off a 22-point performance against the Cougars, is averaging a team-best 15.9 points per game. Kane is at 14.9 points per game while D.D. Scarver is averaging 12.2.

Tinnon had 13 points and 12 boards against Houston. It was his ninth double-double of the season and 21st of his career.

Southern Miss (22-7, 11-3) has won four of its last five games, including an 88-69 win over East Carolina last Saturday.

The Golden Eagles are led by junior forward Dwayne Davis, who is averaging a team-high 14.5 points per game. Senior forward Jonathan Mills leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 per game and also averages 9.2 points per game.

Southern Miss leads C-USA in scoring margin (+12.4), field goal percentage (48.0), 3-point percentage (38.7), rebounding margin (+6.9), steals (10.6) and turnover margin (+2.7).

Marshall will wrap up the regular season Saturday at East Carolina. The C-USA Tournament begins Wednesday, March 13, at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
