Annual BAC-MU golf event set for June 3

— There will be no lack of conversational topics when Marshall University athletics fans gather for the Beckley Athletic Club of Marshall University’s Big Green Golf Outing.

The 23rd annual BAC-MU event will be held Monday, June 3, at Grandview Country Club. It is part of the Big Green Coaches Tour, which is already under way. It will stop at The Greenbrier June 1-2 before the Beckley outing, with a visit to Princeton the next day.

Scheduled to attend the BAC-MU event are football coach Doc Holliday, men’s basketball coach Tom Herrion and Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick. Other unconfirmed coaches will also appear.

The football team will be looking to improve on last year’s 5-7 record. Led by quarterback Rakeem Cato, the Thundering Herd will start the season Saturday, Aug. 31, against former Mid-American Conference rival Miami (Ohio). Also on the schedule are Virginia Tech (Sept. 21 in Blacksburg) and four new members of Conference USA.

On the basketball side, Herrion has the task of making everyone forget a season that got away. Marshall was picked in the preseason as a possible at-large participant in the NCAA tournament. Instead, the Herd stumbled to a 13-19 record.

Since the season ended in March, three players have left the program — guard DeAndre Kane (who has since transferred to Pitt), guard/forward D.D. Scarver and forward Jamir Hanner.

One of the topics Hamrick will surely be discussing with fans is the progress of the Vision Campaign, a fundraising initiative geared toward several athletics projects. Among them are a new soccer complex that should be completed in time for the start of the season in August, and an indoor practice facility.

Cost to play in the BAC-MU tournament is $125 per golfer. Registration will run from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., followed by a noon shotgun start. Lunch will be provided by Subway/Little General and dinner by Pasquale’s.

Golfers may line up their own foursomes if they pre-register by Friday.
