Monte Ortel named new director of The Greenbrier Classic

Monte Ortel is about to be a very busy man.

The Washington Adventist University graduate was promoted Tuesday as the director of The Greenbrier Classic. Formerly the assistant director of the PGA TOUR event at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, Ortel is now the man in charge, replacing Tim McNeely, who had been the tournament’s director since its inception, before resigning last month to become the athletic director at Fairmont State University.

“Monte’s been with us a long time, and I just kept coming back to the fact that he was a young man that put in his licks and had done a great job for us,” said Greenbrier chairman and CEO Jim Justice, who said he relied on the advice of a number of individuals, including PGA TOUR vice president of rules and competition and Beckley native Slugger White, when making the decision. “When I looked in his eyes, I saw a lot of fire and passion, and that’s what you need if you’re after my heart.”

Ortel, who also has a master’s in sports management from Slippery Rock University, will have less than three months to make sure everything is in order for the fourth-year tournament, scheduled for July 1-7.

“His role is going to change,” said Justice. “He was more of an operations guy, and now he’ll be dealing with a lot of sponsor and player recruitment.”

The Greenbrier Classic will now be looking to fill Ortel’s former position. Justice said they’ll need to move fast to fill the vacancy with the tournament quickly approaching, but they’ll also be careful to make sure the right choice is made.

“We have to get the right person in here,” said Justice. “It’s a big job. (Ortel) will be able to help, but you can only wear so many hats.”
