Cavs fall in Class A championship

BECKLEY — Some things are better late than never. One such thing could be the battle for Wednesday night’s Class A Championship of the Big Atlantic Classic.

In a game that was delayed an-hour-and-a-half to 10:30 p.m., following the triple-overtime thriller between Oak Hill Academy and Montrose Christian, Tygarts Valley defeated Greenbrier West 47-39 to win the Class A crown.

The two teams battled hard for the first quarter of the game, but the Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run late in the second quarter behind the duo of senior Brandon Pitt and freshman Ben Sycafoose.

Greenbrier West’s Josh Martin led a charge late in the game to take the lead back, but in the end there weren’t enough ticks on the clock.

Tygarts Valley will possibly see its name ranked among the top in their class next week follow a second straight win over a team ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press Boys rankings. The Bulldogs defeated the No. 9 Valley Fayette 59-57 on Monday night and the Cavaliers were No. 10 coming into the week.
