Fayetteville to host tournament next week

While many area baseball teams travel south for spring break tournaments, not all have that luxury.

With that in mind, Fayetteville coach Dan Poland came up with the idea of hosting a tournament for teams that won’t be basking in the Myrtle Beach sun.

Now in its second year, the Spring Break Wood Bat Classic will be held April 3-6 at Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

“We always try to travel but never have enough money for it,” Poland said. “And the wood bats are always fun.”

Seven area teams, in addition to Van from Boone County, will play in the tournament. The teams will be divided into two pools: A) Woodrow Wilson, Westside, Richwood and Fayetteville, and B) Wyoming East, Nicholas County, Van and Greenbrier West.

The schedule for pool play is as follows:

n Wednesday, April 3: 9 a.m., Woodrow Wilson vs. Westside; 11 a.m., Westside vs. Richwood; 1 p.m., Woodrow Wilson vs. Richwood; 3 p.m., Wyoming East vs. Nicholas County; 5 p.m., Wyoming East vs. Greenbrier West;

n Thursday, April 4: 9 a.m., Fayetteville vs. Woodrow Wilson; 11 a.m., Fayetteville vs. Westside; 1 p.m., Nicholas County vs. Van; 3 p.m., Greenbrier West vs. Van; 5 p.m., Greenbrier West vs. Nicholas County;

n Friday, April 5: 10 a.m., Fayetteville vs. Richwood; noon, Van vs. Wyoming East.

On Saturday, April 6, the second-place teams from each pool will play in the consolation game at 11 a.m. The pool winners will play for the championship at 1 p.m.

Wyoming East defeated Woodrow Wilson in last year’s inaugural title game.

The story early in the season for most teams in the area has been winter weather that has made it nearly impossible to play. Temperatures are predicted to rise into the 50s for Easter weekend, but even then fields will be too sloppy for use.

Poland is confident, however, that his field will be ready by the start of the tournament one week from today.

“We have a real good field crew guy in Paul Holland,” said Poland, now in his fourth season with the Pirates. “We have tons of bags of (drying agent). We will get it in if the weather cooperates.”

There is no admission price for the tournament.
