— With high school basketball winding down, baseball season will be starting soon. Fans will have the chance this weekend to get a glimpse of what the season has in store.

Several teams will play scrimmage games Friday and Saturday at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley. Friday will feature one game — Liberty versus Greenbrier West at 4:30 p.m. — before a full slate on Saturday:

n Princeton vs. Narrows, Va., 10 a.m.;

n Woodrow Wilson vs. Nitro, noon;

n Independence vs. East Fairmont, 2 p.m.;

n Oak Hill vs. Scott, 4 p.m.

This is the fifth year scrimmage games have been held on Epling Stadium’s all-turf field.

“I think to have the teams come up, and it gives you a measuring stick of where you are,” Tim Epling said. “It also helps teams from our part of the state get outside for the first time. Just like all the teams up north, too. But I know the teams are very excited about playing. They get their practices in, and then they get a chance to play and not have to worry about the weather. Plus, they love coming here and playing at our stadium.”

Woodrow Wilson and East Fairmont will be taking part in the scrimmages for the first time, and second-year Oak Hill head coach Chad Quesenberry is bringing his team for the first time as well.

“I get teams calling me all the time wanting to get in,” Epling said. “That’s the reason we’ve had new teams come in every year. We try to let the (veteran) teams get first dibs because they have been with me for so long.”

The weather should not be much of a problem for the weekend. There is a chance of rain, snow and wind on Wednesday and for temperatures in the mid-20s on Thursday. But the temperatures are predicted to rebound into the low 50s Friday and Saturday.

Also on Saturday, Shady Spring and Scott middle schools will scrimmage at 6 p.m.
