Beckley Area Derby Dames preparing for home debut

Get ready to see fishnets, hot pants and some hard-hitting roller derby girls.

The Beckley Area Derby Dames (BADD), Beckley’s first and only flat track roller derby team, is gearing up for their first home bout Sunday, June 3, at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

They’ll be lacing up their skates, pulling up their fishnets and showing Beckley what roller derby girls are really made of as they face off against the Morgantown Roller Vixens.

“Be ready for non-stop action,” BADD President Yulanda Wiseman, aka Yula B. Hurtin, said.

Admission is $15 for adults and is free for kids ages 12 and under.

Doors will open at 2 p.m. and the whistle will blow at 3 p.m.

Although these girls have gone BADD, they are skating for a very good cause. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Just for Kids, a local non-profit organization dedicated to helping children fight abuse.

Captain of the dames, Stephanie Only, aka Cupcake Cadaver, says, “We don’t get a paycheck and we’re doing this out of pure love for the sport and philanthropic endeavors. Just For Kids is non-profit and needs all the help they can get!”

The dames formed in October and they recently celebrated their first win May 19 against Heart of Appalachia Roller Derby in Nitro.

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a roller derby girl? The next recruitment will be held Saturday, June 9, at MacArthur Skating Rink at 11 a.m. All skill levels are welcome and gear and skates will be provided.

If this full contact sport seems too intense, but you would still like to get involved, BADD is always recruiting non-skating officials, referees and volunteers.

Wiseman says roller derby has put her in the best shape of her life, and she says there is nothing out there that will teach you more about yourself than a team sport.

“Roller derby saved my soul,” Only said. “It is a sisterhood, aggression therapy and a form of entertainment for everyone. We’re all performers now.”
