Based on the results of his team’s last two tournaments, Greenbrier East coach Brian Miluk has reason to be encouraged.
The Spartans had four finalists and two champions at the season-opening Beckley Newspapers Invitational on Dec. 1. Then, at last weekend’s Bill Hutchinson Classic in Richwood, six East wrestlers went undefeated and another finished 4-1.
“The bottom line,” Miluk said, “is we had more undefeated wrestlers and more wins than at this time last year. So I think we are moving in the right direction.”
The Spartans won’t be moving in any direction this weekend, because they host the GreenbrierDuals at 11 a.m. Saturday. The host team will welcome Oak Hill, Wyoming East and Covington, Va., as well as the “B” teams from Shady Spring and Greenbrier West.
“I think we will get some more guys back in the lineup, and it is exciting to be at home,” Miluk said. “Our athletic director, Jerry Bradley, has set it up to where this can now be an annual event for us. It is a good opportunity to see some local talent and get some really good schools in here.”
East is coming off what Miluk feels was an encouraging performance in Richwood. Going undefeated on the day were freshman Jasiel Kinder at 106 pounds, sophomores Adam Zimmerman (152) and Josiah Solak (170) and juniors Keegan Mickey (170, different bracket), Charles Withrow (182) and Joe Sampson (195).
Heavyweight junior Levi Nelson lost just one match. Other winners were senior Michael Blevins (126) and freshman Sheldon Simmons (145).
Three wrestlers did not make the trip because they were taking the ACT, including 2012 state qualifiers Davis Solak and Dylan Bullock. Three others missed because of injury.
Miluk expects to have Solak and Bullock, plus 113-pounder Jared Morgan back for Saturday’s duals. Morgan is a former Junior States champion.
“I really am (encouraged),” Miluk said. “We are not taking any shortcuts. We are building a foundation.
“I think the future is really bright for Greenbrier East wrestling.”
