LORAIN, Ohio —
The West Virginia Miners increased their winning streak to 10 games Tuesday, defeating the Lorain County Ironmen 5-4.
The Miners went up early, scoring three runs in the first inning from Grant Massey, David Martinelli and Paul Trenhaile. West Virginia added a run in the third inning when Martinelli scored his second run of the game, coming home on an error by IronMen first baseman Andrew Gronski.
Lorain County rallied back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning when Lucas Riley and Taylor Emody scored on a Billy Salem triple. Salem then scored on a Tyler Bires single.
The Miners stopped the rally in the sixth, however, when Griffin Moore scored on a Charlie Padilla single.
Nate Langhals added another run for the Ironmen in the bottom of the seventh inning, but relief pitcher T.J. Trujillo (2 IP, 1 K) and closer Kolin Stanley held Lorain County at bay, helping to earn starting pitcher Quinton Yocom (6 IP, 3 runs, 5Ks) the win.
Ironmen pitcher Logan Landon (5.2 IP, 7H, 5R 3K) was awarded the loss.
The Miners (19-12, 2-0) will return to Linda K. Epling Stadium tonight to take on overall first place team the Chillicothe Paints (20-9, 1-0). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
