Fayette County Gun Club wins big

Fayette Gun Club president Bobby Meadows has a goal. He wants some of the area’s best shooters to get some recognition.

With a performance like they had in the 93rd annual State Shoot, it won’t be hard.

The small gun club from Beckwith had six of its 35 shooters competing in the event, held in Wellsburg on July 11-14, that featured more than 400 shooters from West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

“It’s good for the state of West Virginia and good for Fayette County,” Meadows said.

Among the six shooters who competed were husband and wife duo Lonnie and Sandra Spencer of Nettie. Sandra took home top honors in the Lady II class while Lonnie was also a trophy winner.

The Spencers weren’t the only family. Terry Groves of Oak Hill was a money winner and received a silver belt buckle for his performance a year ago. His grandson Cody, of Tucson, Ariz., also shot in his first major event.

“Talk about a proud grandpa,” Meadows said.

Jeffrey Huffman of Parkersville won handicap trophies and money, while Meadows won the D-Class Doubles Championship.

Getting to the event wasn’t easy for the club.

“The Amateur Crapshooting Association says you have to shoot so many registered ASA birds to qualify for the states,” Meadows added. “We shot 1,000 targets, and most of the winners came from our little club right here.”

The small club is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays at the 4-H Camp in Beckwith.
