Miners fall to Paints, tied for first

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Ali Asif walked the only four batters he faced, and the West Virginia Miners fell into a first-place tie after a 4-1 loss to the Chillicothe Paints on Sunday.

West Virginia and Chillicothe are both 22-14 on the year and tied for the top spot in the Prospect League East Division standings.

Asif (0-1) had about as bad a start as possible. He threw 13 straight balls, walking Stuart Eisler, Justin Wagler and Daniel Zuchowski to load the bases. After getting a 1-1 count on Giancarlo Brugnoni, Asif walked him to bring home Eisler.

Asif’s night was done. He was charged with two earned runs in his second start of the season. He lasted just 2 2-3 innings against the Paints in Beckley on June 19.

Nick Jensen-Clagg was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and walking one while holding the Miners to four hits over five shutout innings.

The Miners avoided being shut out by the Paints for the second straight night. With one out in the sixth, Griffin Moore tripled and scored on a single by Robert Tavone Jr. for West Virginia’s first run in 14 1-3 innings.

West Virginia will return home tonight against Richmond. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. It will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night, with anyone wearing pink or a pink ribbon getting a $2 discount on one ticket.

Tuesday will be Cancer Awareness Night — wear pink again for $2 off. It will also be Two for Tuesday (buy a ticket, get one free) and Baseball Bingo Night.
