The Nicholas County Grizzlies captured the girls Class AA Region 4 track and field championship Thursday in Charleston.
The Grizzlies tallied 135 points to outdistance runner-up Herbert Hoover (84) and the remainder of the field.
The NCHS boys scored 75 points to finish third behind Herbert Hoover and Poca, both which scored 103 points.
For the Nicholas girls, Serena Mullins and Elizabeth Messer were individual winners. Mullins captured the 200-meter dash in 27.82 seconds, while Messer won the 100 hurdles (16.38).
The Grizzlies also claimed victories in three relays: 4x200 (1:54.0), 4x400 (4:27.8) and shuttle hurdles (1:09.77). The 4x200 consisted of Mullins, Maria Stear, Taylor Board and Alexis Brown. In the 4x400 were Board, Brown, Arianna Crawford and Rebecca Passerella. The shuttle hurdles was comprised of Crawford, Brown, Stear and Messer.
Mullins gained a second-place showing in the 100 (13.3), Messer was runner-up in the long jump (14-10), Crawford placed second in the 100 hurdles (17.29), Stear was second in the 300 hurdles (51.86), and Hali Carpenter finished second in the shot put (29-5).
Aidan Payton garnered a pair of third-place finishes (800 in 2:43.13 and 3200 in 12:44.23) for the Grizzlies. Also placing third were Stear (100 hurdles in 17.54) and Dericka Blankenship (long jump in 14-9 ?).
Jackson Reed secured runner-up finishes in the 1600 (5:03.54) and 3200 (10:55.07) to pace the NCHS boys. Austin Hill added third-place efforts in the shot put (43-0) and the discus (122-6), Joe Yeager was third in the 3200 (11:03.27) and Jared Tharp was third in the high jump (5-6).
Nicholas was second in the shuttle hurdles (1:08.84) and third in the 4x800 (9:23.35).
The top three in each event qualify for the state meet, except the top four in pole vault and high jump. The 13th through 16th qualifying positions for the state meet will be determined by the next four fastest/farthest times/distances from the regional meets.

The Richwood girls and the Greenbrier West boys earned team titles in Class A Region 3 track and field qualifying Wednesday at Charleston.
Richwood scored 153 points to capture top honors in the girls division. Runner-up Greenbrier West tallied 98 points and third-place Sherman scored 92.
In a much-tighter boys competition, Greenbrier West triumphed by one point, 118-117, over runner-up Richwood. Midland Trail followed in third with 80 points.
In girls individual events, Richwood’s Hannah Brown, Valley’s Abby Buchan and Sherman’s Amelia Sebok were triple-winners.
Brown was victorious in the 100-meter dash (13.77 seconds), 200 (28.31) and long jump (15 feet, 1 inches).
Buchan captured three field events: high jump (4-10), shot put (30-3) and discus (97-3).
Sebok won the 800 (2:41.36), 1600 (5:57.45) and 3200 (13:18.14).
On the boys side, Meadow Bridge’s Dakota Clere was a triple-winner and Richwood’s Levi Mowery won two events.
Clere captured titles in the 100 (11.93), 400 (52.77) and 800 (2:12.3), while Mowery posted wins in the 110 hurdles (17.46) and 300 hurdles (43.44).
In the Class A Region 2 meet at Elkins Wednesday, the Pocahontas County girls placed second with 77 points and the Warrior boys were third with 74.
Individual winners for Pocahontas were Melissa Murphy (1600, 5:50.98), Stephen Simmons (high jump, 6-0) and Devin Rose (shot put in 39-9 and discus in 140-2).
