Deb Allen hoped Woodrow Wilson’s hitting would pick up against Parkersburg Friday.
The Big Reds’ Cassidy Newbrough was having none of it, however.
Newbrough fired a four-inning no-hitter, walking three and striking out eight, in a 10-inning victory at Flying Eagles Park.
“We have to hit the ball to win and we’re not hitting it yet,” Allen said of Woodrow, which also struggled offensively in losses to Greenbrier East and Ripley. “But we will.”
Newbrough, a junior, gave up bases on balls to Emily Lane in the first inning, Maggie Cook in the third and Cara McAulay in the fourth. She also hit Lane with a pitch in the fourth.
No Woodrow runner advanced beyond second base.
“Cassidy is a third-year starter, and this was her second shutout in a row,” coach Ron Perdue said. “We have a freshman who’s pretty good, too, and they go back and forth.”
The Flying Eagles never tested Parkersburg’s infield. Other than the strikeouts, all the outs were fly balls.
“We’re trying too hard to hit the ball,” Allen said. “They need to be more selective of the balls they hit.”
The 5-3 Big Reds got eight hits off Woodrow sophomore Cara MacAulay, who gave way to Caitlin Fisher for the final two outs in the fourth.
Left fielder Baylee Hilling did much of the damage, going 3 for 3 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs.
Her third-inning two-bagger scored Brittany Allison and Newbrough, who had walked. She then ripped a shot over the left field fence in the fourth to once again bring in Newbrough, who had hit a two-run double.
That was Baylee’s second home run,” Perdue said. “She’s just a sophomore.”
Center fielder Morgan Lanham and shortstop Kaleigh Westfall matched Newbrough with two hits apiece.
Allen remains confident her team will improve.
“I like our attitude and hustle. They’re going to get it,” she said. “It takes patience sometimes.”
Woodrow returns to action today with a 1 p.m. home game against St. Albans.
