As if running a 5K wasn’t enough, try throwing in workout moves at predetermined points in the race.
That’s the Crossfit 5K, which will be run Saturday starting at the Rails to Trails across from Chick-fil-A in Beckley. The event will begin at 9 a.m., with a registration and check-in period set for 7:30-8:30 a.m.
All proceeds go to the United Way of Southern West Virginia.
There will be 26 trophies handed out in four age groups — 19-under, 20-30, 31-40 and 40-over. All competitors will go through an atypical race.
“Every quarter mile there will be pushups or situps or squats or burpees,” said race organizer David Chinn. “After running a quarter mile, you might do 20 situps. Then you run another quarter mile and do 20 pushups.”
A 5K converts to a little over three miles, so there are potentially 12 workout moves to be performed in addition to the running.
“It will be a crossfit-type workout. ... If I had enough weights I would have them lifting, but that’s impossible,” Chinn said.
A burpee, by the way, is a combination of squat, pushup and vertical jump.
The basis of crossfit has been around for years, but the craze has hit the Mountain State — Beckley included — over the last two or three years. Crossfit Beckley, run by Chinn and his wife Cynthia, is one of 5,500 gyms affiliated with crossfit in the nation.
“Somebody who runs all the time might not be the fastest, and somebody who works out all the time might not be the strongest,” said Chinn, who is also owner and president of L.A. East Fitness, where Crossfit Beckley is located. “Crossfit does both.
“And it’s actually a sport, not a workout. You can actually qualify for the Crossfit Games. The championship was on ESPN two weeks ago.”
