Concord’s Coyle named MEC Pitcher of the Week

For The Register-Herald

— Concord University senior pitcher Tyler Coyle was named the Mountain East Conference Pitcher of the Week after his strong performance against the University of Charleston over the weekend, the conference office announced Monday.

Coyle, a native of Clemmons, N.C., threw arguably his best game since coming to Concord in the Mountain Lions' 3-0 win against Charleston in game two of Saturday's doubleheader by tossing a complete game three-hit shutout. Coyle, who walked just one batter in addition to striking out one UC hitter, retired 11 of the game's final 13 batters in the victory.

The shutout was the first of his Concord career as was his three hits allowed. On the season, Coyle is 3-2 with 20 strikeouts and a 4.63 ERA in 46.2 innings pitched. In eight starts in 2014, Coyle has thrown two complete games and has pitched at least 5.2 innings in seven of eight starts.

Concord, which has won seven of its last eight games, will look to continue its push towards the top of MEC standings in a pair of road doubleheaders this weekend at Wheeling Jesuit.

Urbana's Cody Ridinger was named Player of the Week.

In softball, West Virginia Wesleyan's Jess Griffin is the Player of the Week, while UVa-Wise's Taylor Brandts and Notre Dame's Ashley Hall share Pitcher of the Week honors. All three players honored tossed no-hitters last week in Mountain East Conference play.
