A showdown in the works?

Top two teams in AA/A wrestling rankings could meet on Saturday

Region 3 is on quite a run right now in Class AA/A wrestling. Check the latest state rankings for proof.

Greenbrier West and Independence are tied for the No. 1 spot in the state coaches rankings, released Wednesday at www.wvmat.com. Each team received three first-place votes and was second on remaining ballots.

Greenbrier West, the reigning state champion, had been alone in the top spot before the latest rankings. Independence, state runner-up each of the past two seasons, was second in each of the previous two polls.

In the individual rankings, Indy has a wrestler in all weight classes except 285. The Cavaliers are ranked in 11 of the 14 divisions.

Both teams will compete at The Lumberjack Classic this weekend at the Summersville Armory, and will likely face each other. If both teams win their pools on Friday, they will be placed in Saturday’s championship pool. In that case, West and Indy would meet in an anticipated dual at a time that will be determined by seeding.
