Beckley Art Group hosts multi-media art show

BECKLEY — An exhibit that has been traveling around  West Virginia made its way to the Cynthia Bickey Art Gallery at 600 Johnstown Road in Beckley Saturday and will remain there until April 30.

Gallery director Karen Lilly said the show is the West Virginia Art and Craft Guild Juried Competition, which boasts artwork in a multitude of media from artists across the state. A juried competition simply means that a panel of experts in each medium has previously examined the artwork to decide if it is good enough quality to be in an exhibit, Lilly explained. The exhibit’s previous stop was in Wheeling.

“There are a total of 32 different media, techniques and styles represented in the show,” Beckley Art Group member and artist Mary Anne Hodson explained. “There are 140 pieces in the show ranging from baskets, stoneware, wood reliefs and even sterling silver jewelry.”

The exhibition is made possible by financial assistance from the West Virginia Commission of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, Hodson said.

The gallery is working in part with the Beckley Art Group, according to Hodson. The group was founded 50 years ago, and Hodson says it is the oldest art organization in the state. She said membership has grown in the past years and continues to do so.

BAG is a nonprofit organization that relies on grants and donations in order to afford daily operations. Hodson said the group is always in need of volunteers, and she believes it is a good way to give back to the community. Anyone interested may contact Hodson at 304-252-7967.

Lilly encourages the public to come out and support the arts. The show will display art from more than 56 artists throughout West Virginia and is free to the public. Art displayed will be available for purchase.

The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.
