Infant, 1-year-old dead after being found unresponsive in Fayette County

Two children discovered unresponsive at Mountainair Mobile Home Park in Hilltop Tuesday morning were later pronounced dead at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler reported.

The cause and manner of death for both the 3-month-old male and 1-year-old female were unknown Tuesday afternoon.

According to deputies, the Fayette County 911 Center was notified at 9 a.m. that the two children were not breathing and were unconscious.

Deputies performed CPR on the children until crews from Jan-Care and General ambulance arrived to provide medical assistance and to transport them to the hospital, Kessler said.

After “extensive efforts” to resuscitate the children failed, Kessler said, PMC staff pronounced them dead.

The state Medical Examiner’s office is now involved, and the incident is under investigation by deputies, officials reported.

Check back for more information as it becomes available.
