MEADOW CREEK —
The National Park Service is investigating the drowning of a man after a canoe capsized on the New River.
The park service identified the victim on Tuesday as 36-year-old Gary Lee Adkins of Pax.
The park service says in a news release that Adkins and his 15-year-old and 16-year-old stepsons were in a flat bottom canoe that capsized half way through the Meadow Creek rapids. Adkins couldn’t make it to the shore and drowned.
The park service says one of the boys couldn’t swim and was helped to the shore by his brother.
The accident occurred Monday evening near Meadow Creek.
