Leaders plan Beckley Day of Hope to reach out to those in need in community

BECKLEY — Community, church and political leaders in Beckley met for a “vision casting day” at the Cross Point Church of God Monday to discuss plans for a Beckley Day of Hope on Aug. 17 at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex.

John Jordan, pastor at Calvary Assembly of God in Beckley, said the Day of Hope is a time for the community to come together to give those who are struggling encouragement and hope.

On the Day of Hope, around 1,000 volunteers are expected to distribute 35,000 pounds of groceries to guests as well as provide free health services, a job fair, live entertainment and activities for children.

Jordan said among the other activities, the group is considering offering family portraits and haircuts.

“We hope to bring all these different agencies and organizations together to reach out into our community and provide some hope for those individuals who may have need or who are struggling in different ways,” he explained.

In addition to the Aug. 17 outreach, churches involved with the Day of Hope make a commitment to “implement acts of kindness, disciple new converts, and connect new converts to the people, resources, and programs that help them,” according to the church informational packet.

The Beckley Day of Hope is a day of outreach through Convoy Of Hope, a national faith-based organization that aims to empower and equip a church to meet the physical and spiritual needs of struggling families.

Community leaders and businesses who could not attend the event and want to volunteer or offer services should contact Jordan by phone, 304-252-0717, or  e-mail, pastor@outoftheboxchurch.org, or Heather Radford, radford13@suddenlink.net.
