Trying to juggle the possibility of snow, the impending annual WESTEST2 and the rising temperatures in some un-airconditioned schools if instructional days march on into June are recurring problems for the Raleigh County Board of Education and the calendar committee.
However, the committee has presented two possible 2013-14 calendars to all school employees for a vote and the most popular choice will be considered before the Raleigh County Board of Education at their May 14 meeting.
The two options presented for next year are similar to the current 2012-13 calendar, with employees starting back on Aug. 12 and students on Aug. 15.
Both calendars show the last day of instruction falling on June 3 and the last day of employment on June 7.
Both calendars show a weeklong break over Thanksgiving, Nov. 25 through Nov. 29, and seven days over the winter holidays, Dec. 23 through Jan. 1.
Superintendent Jim Brown said the biggest difference between these two 2013-14 calendar options and the current year is spring break.
Because Easter 2014 falls much later than usual, April 20, spring break will come the week before Easter rather than after.
Spring break on both calendars is scheduled for April 14 through 18; however, both calendars allot an IS Day (Instructional Support and Enhancement Day) on April 21, the Monday following the holiday.
“Our fear was that students would be required to come back right after spring break and take the WESTEST,” explained Brown.
The only difference between the two calendar choices for the 2013-14 school year is where the six OS Days (Outside School Environment Days) fall. In option A, all OS Days fall at the end of the school year, over the last week in May and the first week of June.
In option B, three of the OS Days are earlier in the year — March 7 and 21, and April 4.
Brown said if the district were to have school cancellations due to snow, those earliest OS Days would be the first to come off the calendar.

Employees without a school e-mail account can vote via traditional ballot.
