Raleigh Commission warns of mail scam

BECKLEY — The Raleigh County Commission is warning residents of an ongoing mail scam requesting money from someone pretending to be from the county clerk’s office.

County attorney Bill Roop said the scam is coming from Thousand Oaks, Calif., and they are requesting $83 for a copy of the resident’s deed for their home.

The letter has some personal information, as well as information about the home. Roop said whoever is behind the scam has accessed the information through the assessor’s website.

After receiving a flood of phone calls from residents asking if the letter is legitimate, Roop called the Attorney General, who said this is happening statewide, not just in Raleigh County.

“Do not send an $83 check, or it’s the last time you’ll see it,” Commission President Dave Tolliver said.

Roop said you can get a copy of your home deed at the clerk’s office for just a few dollars.
