Tickets still available: Taste of Home show tonight

Nothing says holidays like a taste of home. Bringing an authentic experience to the table will be less of a challenge this season with the much-anticipated Taste of Home Cooking School show happening tonight at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. to a feast for the senses — tastings, grand displays, piled-up giveaways and a packed schedule of everyone’s favorite activity — cooking.

Culinary specialist Cheryl Cohen travels the country year-round teaching Taste of Home’s best seasonal recipes with tips to help those of every culinary skill level. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., not only will attendees watch ingredients transformed into delicious appetizers and entrees before their eyes, but some will get the opportunity to taste the dishes prepared onstage. This year’s expanded show brings an enhanced line-up of cooking demonstrations — about two hours’ worth. Fold in regular drawings for door prizes, including a John Thomas dinette set and La-Z-Boy recliner from Grand Home Furnishings, and a Kenmore Elite microwave from Sears, and it’s a winning combination for local food-lovers.

Additional event sponsors include Chick-fil-A of Beckley, Kroger and Crossroads Chevrolet. Each ticketholder also receives a Dickey’s Barbecue Pit coupon for a free barbecue sandwich.

General admission is $15, which also includes goodie bags stuffed with coupons, samples and registrations for door prizes. “There are very few tickets left,” explained show coordinator for Beckley Newspapers, Ann Kelly.

“This is the perfect event for a ladies’ evening out or for any man or woman who loves cooking. It’s also perfect for someone who may be making a first Thanksgiving dinner and needs more confidence. There’s something for those of every skill level,” she added.

According to Taste of Home, 50 percent of those who attend their cooking schools return year after year and 1 in 10 follow the show to other cities. Taste of Home magazine publishes 3,000 recipes submitted by people across the United States and Canada from over 40,000 submissions. Before recipes are included inside Taste of Home, they are selected for evaluation by the Taste of Home test kitchen. Taste of Home is a trusted recipe source for home chefs using affordable, everyday ingredients.
