— Student artwork from the Piney Creek Watershed Association’s first-ever “Clean Streams Everyday” Poster Contest are on display in the lobby of The Register-Herald through May 9.

Around 70 students from Liberty, Shady Spring and Woodrow Wilson high schools participated.

Jim Fedders, executive director of the association, said students were awarded first through fourth place prizes for their creativity, artistry and keeping with the theme of clean streams and clean water.

“The imagination of the students exceeded my expectations. Some of them really got creative,” he said.

Fedders said the project was made possible with an arts integration grant through the Beckley Area Foundation.

“We saw this as an opportunity to get involved in working with the schools and accomplishing our goals through education. We went into art classes and talked to around 300 students about the ways they can help keep our streams and drinking water clean, like picking up litter and pet waste and disposing of medications correctly,” he explained.

Liberty High School 10th-grader Michayla Fulk was awarded first-place; Woodrow Wilson ninth-grader Kaitly Tomlin, second-place; Liberty 12th-grader Caitly Meadows, third-place; and Liberty 10th-grader Autumn Cole, fourth.

Students will receive $200, $150, $100 and $50 gift certificates for art supplies, respectively.

The first-place poster will be professionally printed and included with Piney Creek Watershed Association’s promotional literature.

Fedders said this was the first poster contest for the association and he hopes to continue something like it in the future.

The Piney Creek Watershed works to maintain and improve the quality of waters within the watershed, which includes 25 percent of Raleigh County, including all of the City of Beckley.

Posters can be viewed at The Register-Herald between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
