BECKLEY — Although the schedule is a bit different than originally planned, Theatre West Virginia Act II is officially alive, with 17 scheduled showings of “Hatfields and McCoys.”

The curtain will rise for its 54th season on July 11, and Manager Scott Hill said these 17 shows will be produced with the same quality theater patrons have come to know and love over the years.

The theater closed in September after a run of more than five decades, with popular productions including the historic play “Honey in the Rock” and the later addition of “Hatfields and McCoys.” TWV also celebrated some of the best of Broadway and staged a number of productions aimed at children, many of whom got their introduction to live stage-acting by attending Theatre West Virginia.

The state Legislature set aside $125,000 for Theatre West Virginia earlier this year.

That was significantly less than the $230,000 in state funding originally planned for the theater, but organizers say it was welcome nonetheless.

And while last year's budget was $900,000, organizers are looking to raise enough extra money to come up with a funding total of $450,000 for this year.

Sen. Mike Green,

D-Raleigh, said the amount might be less than in the past, but should help with the struggle to survive.

“With the restructuring of TWV board and business model, the funds should be significant enough to give TWV one final attempt to make it a profitable venture,” Green said when the legislative funding was announced.

And the productions will go on this season.

On board for “Hatfields and McCoys” are director Rich Jagunic, casting director Dan Henthron, choreographers Toneta Akers-Toler and Donald Laney and musical director Teresa McCoy.

Showings will be July 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30, 31, Aug. 1 and 2.

A special performance by Phil Dirt and the Dozers will wrap up the season on Aug. 16.

Audition dates are still being confirmed.
