It’s a chair-ity auction that might’ve enticed Henry David Thoreau to change his mind.
“I had three chairs in my house,” the 19th century poet once said. “One for solitude, two for friendship, three for society.”
But if Thoreau had gone to Lewis Automotive Showroom and gazed at the unique chair displays for the Women’s Resource Center’s Fourth annual Chair-ity Auction, he may have found excuses to own more chairs.
The 38 wooden Adirondack chairs, supplied by Amish Barn in MacArthur and donated by businesses and individuals, are hand-painted by local artists.
“No two are alike,” said Dee Sizemore, WRC development coordinator. “There’s something for everybody.
“It’s just crazy, but there are no duplications.”
Popular last year, the “Walking Dead” are making a comeback appearance on the 2013 rockers. Marilyn Monroe and the King of Cool, Steve McQueen, are friendlier famous faces captured on the wooden canvas.
There’s a “newcomer” to the chair circuit this year, too, Sizemore said.
It’s “Duck Dynasty.”
“I don’t know exactly what’s on the chair, but I do know that’s the theme the artist is doing,” reported Sizemore, referring to the popular A&E television series.
Sizemore explained that the first auction was the brainchild of former WRC board member Cindy Whitlock, who had experience with a similar auction in New York.
The earlier auctions were held in August at Daniel Vineyards, but the auction is now held in May to give auction winners the whole summer to enjoy their rockers.
Since weather is trickier in May, the event was moved indoors, Sizemore said.
She added that the chairs are a great way for local artists to get exposure.
Most of the chairs were on display last week at the 2013 Beckley-Raleigh County Business Show, explained Sizemore.
“We’ve had (business show patrons) ask us to introduce them to an artist,” she said. “It’s just a win-win.”
The 2012 Chair-ity Auction will be May 17 at Lewis Automotive Showroom. Tickets are $20 per person, and the cost includes a barbecue buffet dinner by Pasquale’s in Beckley from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., soft drinks, and an auction paddle. A wine/beer cash bar will also be available.
House of Harmony is providing entertainment.
The auction for large and small chairs starts at 6:45 p.m.; doors open at 5:30
Gold, silver and bronze sponsor packages are available. Sizemore may be contacted at 304-673-6037 or 304-255-2559 and firstname.lastname@example.org.
