— The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that a body was discovered on Old Turnpike Road in Harper Heights Wednesday.

Sheriff Steve Tanner said the crime scene is active and police are guarding the area.

“Because the body was partially buried, we have had to call in experts to help us recover the remains and to be sure we collect all the physical evidence,” Tanner said.

He said he anticipates having assistance from the medical examiner’s office in Charleston and possibly from specialists from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

“We are unable to give any further information about the body. We do not know if the body is male or female, nor do we know how long the body has been there,” Tanner added.

Tanner said because of the condition and location of the body, “we are assuming this to be a homicide, but we can’t elaborate past that.”
