Alzheimer’s Caregiver Class planned

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and more than 15 million Americans are caring for someone who has Alzheimer’s disease.

These caregivers know firsthand that the care of a person with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia can be overwhelming. Research has shown that an educated caregiver experiences less stress and fewer physical illnesses. With that in mind, Raleigh County Commission on Aging will again present a free seminar called the Alzheimer’s Caregiver Class.

The seminar will be Oct. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Raleigh County Commission on Aging Senior Center, 1614 S. Kanawha St., Beckley.

Class topics will include:

- Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease

- Communicating with the Person with Alzheimer’s

- Managing Behaviors

- Safety Issues

- Legal and Financial Issues

- Activities for the Person with Alzheimer’s

- Caregiver Stress

The class on the Basics of Alzheimer’s will be taught by Carolyn Canini, program and quality coordinator of the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter. All other classes will be taught by Terri Tilley, R.N.

Raleigh County Commission on Aging will provide free books about Alzheimer’s disease to each class member, as well as free lunch.

To ensure that everyone receives the books, the Commission on Aging asks that those interested in attending the class call 304-255-1397, and speak with Terri Tilley to pre-register.

Lights in the southern end of the tunnel illuminate an odd design beside the catwalk near the left lane of the northbound tube of the East River Mountain Tunnel that transports I-77 from Virginia into West Virginia. Two firefighters who made the initial assault through the total darkness of the soot and smoke-filled tunnel left those marks as they slid their arms along the catwalk wall on their journey back to the light.
