BPD names retired police captain as evidence custodian

Beckley Police Department has named retired police captain Randy Boyd as evidence custodian for the department.

Boyd retired from BPD with more than 30 years of law enforcement experience and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

The evidence custodian is primarily responsible for cataloging and maintaining the evidence submitted by officers during a crime investigation.

BPD has also added the integration of an evidence barcoding system which officials said should streamline the process of receiving, storing and releasing found property and evidence through the use of computerized records.

The position opened when the former evidence custodian, Gabriella Brown, was charged with obtaining oxycodone by fraud from the BPD evidence holding room. Brown pleaded guilty in December and is to be sentenced in April.

Capt. Cheri Mullens had been serving in the position in interim.
