W.Va. miner dies after being hit by scoop

State mine safety officials say a coal miner has died after being hit by a scoop at a mine in Raleigh County.

Spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater says 44-year-old John Myles of Hilltop died Tuesday night. The accident occurred at Pocahontas Coal Co.’s Affinity Mine as Myles was shoveling coal ribs.

It’s the second fatality at the mine this month and the fourth mining-related death in West Virginia this year.

Forty-three-year Edward L. Finney of Bluefield, Va., was killed at the Affinity Mine on Feb. 7 when a hoist moved unexpectedly as he was pushing a scoop bucket insert full of trash onto it.

Federal records show Affinity has been cited for about 65 safety violations since January.

Corporate counsel Jennifer Guthrie says Pocahontas is very concerned, but the accidents appear unrelated.
