Police say school bus ran over man in fatal accident

BLUEFIELD — At a press conference Friday afternoon in the Mercer County Courthouse Annex, Senior Deputy A.M. Ballard of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said that a victim discovered dead Thursday along Stoney Ridge Road near Brushfork was lying crossways on the road when a school bus ran over him.

The victim, Patrick Eric Neal, 31, of Bluefield, Va., was apparently lying on the road at 6:16 a.m. when the bus ran over him.

“We’re not certain Mr. Neal was alive at the time,” Ballard said. “There is a possibility he may have been deceased.”

Joe Turner, assistant superintendent of Mercer County Schools, said that the district is saddened by  the tragic accident and added that the school system is “fully cooperating” with the police in their investigation.

Mr. Neal’s body was sent to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office in South Charleston for an autopsy.
