Closings abound, warning continues into afternoon

BECKLEY — According to the National Weather Service in Charleston and in Blacksburg, Va., a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. with snow continuing through the afternoon hours.

Additional light accumulation is possible today. Total official snow accumulation observed in our coverage area is between 12 and 14 inches with an additional warning that overnight wind gusts could reach 35 to 40 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow.

According to The Associated Press, this winter storm has closed more than a dozen county court systems in West Virginia. The state Supreme Court says courts are closed in Webster, Gilmer, Lincoln, Mingo, Mercer, Clay, Raleigh, McDowell, Berkeley, Jefferson, Hampshire and Hardy counties. Randolph County’s courts will close at noon.

Classes at UC-Beckley are canceled today, February 13, due to heavy snowfall in the region. Essential staff are to report as scheduled. All other staff members are to check with their direct supervisor for reporting schedules.

The Greenbrier County Courthouse also is due to weather and road conditions

Tamarack is closed today.

According to Doris Selko, southern regional coordinator for West Virginians for Affordable Healthcare, an enrollment event listed in today’s Register-Herald for Saturday at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center in Beaver has been canceled. A rescheduled enrollment day will be announced later.
