Furfari to hold book signing Saturday at Beckley Newspapers

From Staff Reports

BECKLEY — The dean of West Virginia Sports Writers and Hall of Fame journalist Mickey Furfari will be in the lobby at Beckley Newspapers on Saturday, Dec. 15, to autograph copies of his second book, “Mickey’s Mountaineer Memories Volume II.”

For those who purchase copies of the book prior to Saturday’s event at Beckley Newspapers, Mickey will be signing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. For those purchasing books on Saturday he will be greeting and autographing from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parking and entry into the building for Saturday will be in the rear of the Beckley Newspapers building at 801 N. Kanawha St. Entrance to that lot can be accessed off Elkins Street.

A follow-up to his first book that chronicles his 65-plus years of covering West Virginia University’s athletic department and programs, Furfari’s second compilation features a profile of his former classmate and longtime “Voice of the Mountaineers” Jack Fleming, and pieces on famous WVU quarterbacks Pat White and Major Harris, and current Mountaineer basketball coach Bob Huggins.

Volume II also details some of Furfari’s lighter moments in a piece he titled “The Dumbest Thing I Ever Did In My Life” along with some more serious takes that include his not so cordial relationship with former WVU President Neil Bucklew.

Other stories in the newest book focus on WVU player, coach and athletic director Leland Byrd, the late Coach Bill Stewart, athletic trainer Whitey Gwynne, two-sport star James Jett, current athletic director and former quarterback Oliver Luck, and WVU’s stunning 2012 Orange Bowl victory.

Former WVU star quarterback and NFL referee Fred Wyant, one of Mickey’s longtime friends, authored the foreword for the book.
