Making molasses

COOL RIDGE — Three of Marvin Meadows’ 31 grandkids help feed sugar cane into grandpa’s machine that presses the cane into juice. After the family has 25 gallons of juice, they’ll boil it down into about four gallons of homemade molasses. Meadows, of Cool Ridge, uses his two horses to drive a few odds and ends that he put together to make the cane press. Meadows says he used truck parts, the drive shaft of a deepwell drill, a crane arm, and a few other pieces to make his machine. “There’s no such thing as junk,” he says. “There’s just some stuff that’s recyclable.”
