2013 Boy Scout Jamboree

12,000 visitor passes sold prior to Jamboree beginning

THE SUMMIT — A total of 12,000 visitor passes were pre-sold sold online to the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, according to a staff member at the event’s gateway.

Several thousand more “walkup” visitor tickets were purchased in person over the course of the event at the visitor registration in Bradley.

The Boy Scouts of America will release official numbers on visitors from its Texas headquarters Monday.

The BSA had originally predicted up to 50,000 visitors for the 10-day event.

The biggest visitor day was Saturday, which featured an arena show.

Approximately 8,000 visitors came through the gates that day.

Another 5,500 attended on Friday.

These latter numbers come from Tim Landers, Chief Nursing Officer at the Gateway Medical Center.

Every night, he receives a report with the number of pre-sold tickets for the next day, for planning purposes.

He estimates that about 20 percent of the ticket sales are “walkup,” with the remainder pre-sold.

These preliminary visitor numbers are far less than originally predicted, but Landers warns against judging the potential for economic growth based on a short view.

“It’s not just buying chips at the gas station or filling up on gas. Really, it’s the economic growth that can happen in 20, 30, 40, or even 50 years because these young men now think so highly of West Virginia,” he says.
