Nikki Williamson, with the Piney Creek Watershed Association and VISTA, from left, works on a rain garden Tuesday at New River Park in Beckley. She’s assisted by Nick Frugale and Joe Berry, interns with the Office of Surface Mining in Washington, who are in the area to assist with local watershed projects. The rain garden is a carefully engineered bed of soil, compost, rock and plants that naturally cleans and filters runoff from parking lots and other impervious surfaces, reducing the stormwater load on sewers.
