— Whatever Doug Legursky got for his 22nd birthday, there’s no way it could have been nicer than the gift he received Tuesday.
Legursky was among the Pittsburgh Steelers who were presented with their Super Bowl rings during a private ceremony at Heinz Field. The occasion came on the day Legursky turned 23.
The Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 Feb. 1 in Super Bowl XLIII. It was the franchise’s record sixth championship.
Legursky, a Beckley native, was on the Steelers’ practice squad last year and made the trip to Tampa Bay with the team.
The former Woodrow Wilson all-stater was the 2003 Hunt Award winner as the state’s top prep lineman. He went on to become a four-year starter at center at Marshall.
Legursky signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in April 2008. He was released twice by the team but was able to latch on for good last summer.
In February, Legursky (6-foot-1, 323 pounds) signed a two-year deal with the team, contingent on whether he makes the 54-man roster out of training camp in August.
He is currently second on the depth chart at center behind Justin Hartwig, an eight-year NFL veteran.
Legursky was married to Beckley native Megan Kissinger in March.
Each player got a ring with his name and number on it. On Monday, coach Mike Tomlin said he was excited about getting his ring, but that it will mark the end of the 2008 season. Now, he says, it’s time to focus on 2009.
