Missing man found

Crab Orchard man located after more than 24 hours

By Jeff Stover

Loggers found a Crab Orchard man safe in the woods Wednesday morning, after dozens of area firefighters spent the night looking for him.

Carlos Goode, around 50 years old, was located by loggers doing work in the woods near Eccles, in an area accessible from Glen View Road near Pittman’s Curve, according to Sophia Area Volunteer Fire Chief Danny Treadway. The area where he was located is about 3 or 4 miles from his home, the chief added.

Goode is legally blind and also suffers from seizures, Treadway said, but he was “in fine shape” after spending the night in the woods. The chief said he had an EMS crew to check the man before he was released to go home.

Goode had been last seen around 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to another fire official. Goode frequently takes walks, but when he didn’t return home by Tuesday evening, family members became worried and notified authorities.

The Sophia Area Volunteer Fire Department established a command post and coordinated seven search teams overnight. With no further clues as to Goode’s whereabouts by Wednesday morning, Treadway said he had requested assistance from other resources, including the West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue team from Morgantown and personnel from the Raleigh County Homeland Security office.

However, Goode was located before their arrival.
