CHARLESTON — Brooke Keeton scored 15 points, Stephanie Dorsey added 13 and St. Joseph never trailed in earning its second straight Class A championship with a 58-44 win over St. Marys on Saturday.
The battle between the top two teams in Class A was more of a mismatch. Top-seeded St. Joseph (22-5) opened up a 19-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. St. Joseph made 54.5 percent (12 of 22) of its first-half shots.
Kelsea Fickiesen led No. 2 St. Marys with 16 points and 15 rebounds and Sara O’Neal scored 10.
St. Marys was held to 26 percent shooting (11 of 42) for the game.
State player of the year Mariah Byard scored 22 points to lead North Marion to a 58-45 win over South Charleston on Saturday night for the Huskies’ second straight girls Class AAA championship.
Byard, whose last-second jumper gave North Marion its first title over Huntington last year, scored 17 points in the second half. The Huskies outscored South Charleston 20-10 in the decisive third quarter to take the lead for good.
Kaitlyn Antolock had 13 points and 15 rebounds for top-seeded North Marion (24-1) and Kelsi Wright scored 10.
Sissy Wagner led second-seeded South Charleston (25-2) with 11 points. The Black Eagles shot just 29 percent from the floor and were held to a season low for points.
