Roberts powers Skyhawks

By Tom Fisher
For the Register-Herald

Scott High School’s Jordan Roberts was definitely as good as advertised, leading the Skyhawks to a 47-6 win over Liberty at Glen Daniel Friday.

Liberty opened up the game with an onside kick attempt. But Scott recovered with good field position at the Raiders’ 47.

It went downhill fast from there.

The Skyhawks needed just three plays to score. Shanyne Butcher darted 30 yards for a score and the rout was on.

After that Roberts, one of the state’s top rushers, took over, rushing for 176 yards and four touchdowns. He also passed for 74 yards and even had a 56 yard punt return — all in the first half as Scott went up 35-6 at half-time.

Liberty’s lone score came when Austin Wright connected with Justin Breton on a 2-yard score with 31 seconds left in the first half.

Roberts, the Skyhawks’ senior back, rushed for 254 yards and five touchdowns and was 4-for-8 through the air for 106 yards and a touchdown.

“Jordan’s balance and vision are something you can’t coach,” Scott coach Shane Griffith said. “But his work ethic is even better. He’s up to 208 pounds and has lowered his 40 time to 4.42.”

The second half was more of the same. On Scott’s third play, Roberts went untouched down the sideline for a 44 yard score.

Roberts was not only a running threat. On Scott’s next possession, he connected with Tyler Thompson on a 12-yard score to cap off the Skyhawks’ scoring.

When reminded that he had already passed last season’s total of 2,200 yards, Roberts said, “We’re an offensive program. We train and work hard to improve offensively all summer. Last year we lost in the second round of the playoffs. This year our goal is to win the state championship.”

Liberty plays Shady Spring Friday while Scott is at Sherman.
