Liberty blitzes rival Independence, 41-15

Cross-county rivals met at Glen Daniel as the Liberty Raiders hosted the Independence Patriots at Raider Field on Friday night.

Liberty’s powerful rushing attack was back on track as the Raiders pounded out 503 total yards, 371 rushing.

Jamie Newman, 11 carries, 178 yards, and Nick Hylton, 14 carries, 120 yards, led Liberty’s offensive explosion in a 41-15 victory over the Patriots.

The Raiders marched 91 yards on their first possession in seven plays, finished off with a 5-yard Hylton run.

The Raiders had two mores scores in the first half, a 15-yard pass from Austin Wright to Hylton and a bruising 41-yard run by Newman.

The Patriots finally got on the board with 3:16 left in the first half. After the Independence defense held on downs, Jake Justice capped off a 55-yard drive with a nice 10-yard run. John Bennett kicked the extra point, and the first half ended with Liberty leading 21-7.

Liberty’s Hylton and Newman led the second-half offensive showcase as Newman’s 52-yard run was the highlight of a five-play, 82-yard drive which ended on Wright’s four-yard touchdown run to start the second half.

Hylton broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run and Wright passed 21 yards to Jonathan Rowles to finish the scoring for the Raiders.

The Patriots’ Richard Hampton threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Ben Cadle to cap the night’s scoring.

Liberty coach Jeff Alexander said, “Our defense played well and our rushing game was strong, but I’m not happy with 118 yards in penalties. I felt we left 20 points on the field tonight. We can’t have that many penalties and expect to beat Scott next week. If we can cut down on our penalties and continue to run the ball, I feel like we can have a good game with Scott.”
