The Greenbrier Classic

Youth Day event a success

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Sure, the big boys were in town.

But a strong emphasis was placed on area children at The Greenbrier Classic, which hosted its third Youth Day event Tuesday.

PGA TOUR pros Billy Horschel and Jonathan Byrd participated in The First Tee Scramble with four children involved in The First Tee of West Virginia program, who got to play on holes 1, 17 and 18 of The Old White TPC.

Boo Weekley was the keynote speaker during a luncheon.

Trick shot specialist Billy Winters entertained a couple of hundred children and their parents for a dazzling display of golf antics on the Meadows Course.

“We want the kids to have fun first,” said Rich Kissinger, director of programming for The First Tee of West Virginia. “And then we want them to learn our ‘Nine Core Values’ and learn healthy habits.”

Kids ranging from age 5 to 17, from “Beckley, Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg — all over the state,” were present, according to Kissinger.

Youth Day was sponsored by The First Tee and Polo.

“It’s great that Polo gets some of their players to come out and play with the kids,” Kissinger said.

“They get to interact with the players. It’s an awesome way to see what golf’s about at a very high level.

“The golfers are very accommodating,” Kissinger added. “That’s one of the things that separates them from players in other major sports. They’re very approachable.

“The luncheon was a fundraiser, which allows us to reinvest and continue programming at The First Tee.”
