Watson shoots 3-under 67, climbs into 8th place

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Plenty of sleep and a good old-fashioned cheeseburger.

That’s how two-time Masters Champion Bubba Watson planned on celebrating the Fourth of July after shooting a three-under 67 to move up the leaderboard into tie for eighth at five-under par.

“You know, I’ll take it,” Watson said. “It’s a start. It’s two days. I made the cut and hopefully, we’ll improve on the weekend.”

The Greenbrier Sporting Club resident carded a two-under 68 Thursday.

On Friday, Watson had four birdies and one bogey, which came on the par-4 sixth.

I played about the same,” he said of first two rounds. “I didn’t make as many mistakes. I guess the wind on the front nine wasn’t blowing that hard so I could guess right.

“I had some trouble coming down the stretch just trying to guess the wind. But I held it together. I wish I’d have made a couple more and not made that one bogey, but all in all it’s good.”

After his first round, Watson was hoping to get better playing conditions Friday. He got just that with cool temperatures — a slight difference from the hot, humid and windy play of Thursday afternoon.

“It still played soft,” he added. “Around here right now it’s pretty soft. You can fly it right at the holes.”

Watson has yet to have a bad round on The Old White TPC. He’s shot in the 60s in all six of his rounds with his 67 Friday the lowest so far.

The six-time PGA Tour winner might have to go lower as 13-under and 16-under have won the last two years.

“It’s a good first two days,” Watson said. “Hopefully, I can come out and play a little better on the weekend and we can move up [the leaderboard] pretty quick.”

Watson tees off at 1:10 p.m. today and he’s got one goal in mind for the weekend.

“I’m trying to win this golf tournament,” he said.
