2011 FedEx Cup winner commits

The field for next week’s Greenbrier Classic continues to change — and improve.

Greenbrier chairman and CEO Jim Justice confirmed late Wednesday night that 2011 FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas has committed to play in the PGA TOUR event, which will take place July 4-7 at The Old White TPC Course in White Sulphur Springs.

“He’s a really big name,” said Justice. “We’re really happy he’s coming back.”

Haas nearly won the 2011 Greenbrier Classic, falling just short in a playoff with Bob Estes and Scott Stallings, who made birdie on the first playoff hole, No. 18, to win for the first time on the PGA TOUR.

Haas, whose father, Jay, won nine times on the PGA TOUR, is a native of Greenville, S.C., and currently resides in Charlotte, N.C. The 31-year-old Wake Forest University graduate has won four times on the PGA TOUR. He also won the Haskins Award as the top collegiate golfer in 2004.

Bubba Watson is making his first trip to The Greenbrier Classic this year, and he’s already in West Virginia. On Thursday, the 2012 Masters champion posted a picture of the practice range at The Greenbrier with the message, “Hitting balls @The_Greenbrier! This place is #AWESOME!”

Watson finished fourth at last week’s Travelers Championship but made headlines when he criticized his caddie after carding a triple-bogey on the par-3 16th hole that erased a two-shot lead.
