Community cast featured in ‘Man of La Mancha’ at Greenbrier Valley Theatre

LEWISBURG — The timeless Broadway hit “Man of La Mancha” continues at Greenbrier Valley Theatre.

The awe-inspiring musical runs June 18 to 21 and 25 to 28 at 7:30 p.m. There will be two Saturday matinee performances June 21 and 28 at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $26 for general admission, $23 for seniors and $20 for children/students. For tickets or more information, call the GVT Box Office at 304-645-3838 or visit www.gvtheatre.org.

This remarkable musical is a play-within-a-play featuring Miguel de Cervantes, who has been imprisoned during the Spanish Inquisition. He unfolds his precious play “Don Quixote” to a kangaroo jury of his fellow prisoners while awaiting his actual trial. Cervantes brings to life the aging, eccentric Alonso Quijana, who transforms himself into Don Quixote embarking on a quest for knighthood.

The structure of Dale Wasserman’s powerhouse musical allows for a large cast, which gives GVT a chance to highlight talented actors from Lewisburg and around West Virginia. The community actors have graciously given their evenings and weekends since rehearsals began in mid-May.

“Man of La Mancha” features GVT stage veterans Gary Brown (“Little Women”), Larry Davis (“To Kill a Mockingbird”), Blair Hicks (“Greenbrier Ghost”) and Daniel Ryan (“Seussical Jr.”). Dr. Jim Caplinger is familiar to GVT audiences as the facilitator of pre-show talks during the MET: Live in HD opera series. Making his debut on GVT’s stage is Ronceverte resident Doug Hylton, who said he has found the experience to be educational and enjoyable.

“It’s been great learning what professional theater is all about,” Hylton said. “It gave me the opportunity to see behind the scenes.”

Hylton, who sits on GVT’s Board of Directors, added that this experience gave him a better understanding of how the theater operates. He has enjoyed gaining insight into the production process, as well as getting to know the professional actors on a more personal level.

“I’ve had a blast with everyone,” said Hylton. “(I’m) overwhelmed by the talent that that’s there.”
