BECKLEY —
The fall session of DivorceCare will begin Sept. 14 at the Christian Resource Center, 300 N. Kanawha St., Beckley, across from the Raleigh County Public Library in Beckley. Sessions begin at 7 p.m..
The 13-week program is open to those who have experienced or are currently experiencing separation or divorce. Since early 2009, approximately 26 have participated in the seminar/support group. One participant has found reconciliation with his former spouse and has said that principles discussed in the group have helped to make the remarriage a success.
Another participant noted, “They hit the nail on the head. Everything they talked about was what I was going through. It has shown me that I will get through this with God’s help and that I am not alone. It is great to talk with people who understand and know what you are going through.”
DivorceCare consists of a set of videos presented by experts on various topics familiar to those going through the circumstances surrounding divorce. Some topics include depression, loneliness, finances, children, anger and dating.
There is also a session that considers reconciliation, either a full reconciliation with remarriage or reconciliation with the former spouse facilitating better parenting and promoting forgiveness.
A workbook is available for purchase at $15 which will be used to follow the videos and that includes an “On Your Own” section for participants to complete between sessions.
The group is open and participants are welcome to begin at any session. After a participant completes a session, he may choose to attend additional groups and there is no cost to return. New groups form each February and September.
DivorceCare is an international, faith-based, nondenominational group under North Carolina-based Church Initiatives.
A website that will provide more information is divorcecare.org.
The local group is sponsored by Jordan Christian Fellowship of Sophia and facilitators are Craig and Linda Spooner of Daniels. The Spooners have been involved in DivorceCare as participants and facilitators for several years.
