TWV academy enrolling students

Theatre West Virginia’s Professional Training Academy is currently enrolling students for its fall semester classes, which begin Sept. 3 and run weekly through Nov. 15.

The classes are open to students ages 5 to adult.

Classes this semester include Musical Theatre, taught by Katherine Santschi from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays; Acting I / Intermediate Acting, taught by Susan Leist from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays; Advanced Acting, taught by Terry Evans from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays; and Stage Make-up, taught by Evans from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.

The Professional Youth Troupe, taught by Leist and Evans from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, is an invitation-only production class, usually made up of advanced students from previous classes.

Leist, Evans and Santschi are members of TWV’s Educational Touring Co., which performs programs in schools in West Virginia and bordering states through the school year. Leist and Evans are TWV veterans, while Santschi is new to the company this year.

The PTA was founded in 1998, with a mission to “develop human potential in people of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels through performing arts training and performing opportunities. To build self-esteem in providing an atmosphere where students can positively express themselves in an accepting environment.”

Theater promotes life skills, physical and perceptual abilities, cooperation, concentration, problem solving, and self-esteem.

Frequently, PTA students audition for and receive roles in TWV’s summer productions. The planned musical for summer 2014 is Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” running in repertory with “Honey in the Rock” and “Hatfields and McCoys.”

Each class costs $132 for the 11-week semester. Students may sign up for more than one class, with discounts offered for those who sign up for multiple classes, or two or more students enrolling from the same family.

Additional fees are required for supplies for both Musical Theatre and Stage Make-Up.

All classes are taught at the TWV Administrative Building at the corner of Whitestick and Spruce streets in Mabscott.

The classes culminate with a recital scheduled for Nov. 15 at the Hulett C. Smith Theatre at Tamarack.
