Students First Mini Grants applications being accepted

— As iPad sightings happen all across Raleigh County this fall, Students First Mini Grants Chair Dan Doman reminds educators not to overlook Beckley Area Foundation’s available awards.

With additional funding from the Carter Family Foundation, $10,000 is available for grants to county teachers in pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade.

Doman, a retired educator, explained, “This program enters its 16th year of providing an opportunity for teachers to submit a brief, straightforward and uncomplicated request for up to $500 funding for their classroom project. They do need to show that the classroom activity directly involves and benefits students while demonstrating originality and educational merit.”

The simple one-page application is available for download at the foundation’s website,, along with a completed sample application.

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 1.

Speakers’ fees will not be considered and educational supplies will be funded only if they are part of an imaginative program. Projects must be completed by the end of May 2014 and a brief follow-up report submitted to the BAF office.

A committee comprised of educators and community representatives will review applications during October with awards made in early November.

Questions regarding the program should be directed to BAF staff at 304-253-3806 or
