All Catholics and their families living in the West Virginia counties of Fayette, Greenbrier, Monroe, Pocahontas, Summers and the Virginia counties of Alleghany, Bath and Craig are invited to the annual All Area Catholic Picnic July 21 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Greenbrier State Forest, just south of the I-64 White Sulphur Springs/Caldwell exit.
Sponsored by Alleghany Highlands Council 8689 Knights of Columbus, the picnic is hosted by the Knights and the Council’s Auxiliary, the parishes of St. Charles Borromeo and St. Catherine of Siena and will be held in and around Shelter #1 in the picnic area.
“We shall be providing the hamburgers and hot dogs and all the fixings, plus the paper products and drinks,” noted Grand Knight Perk Berry of Council 8689, who added, “Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and enjoy the afternoon.”
With the nearby swimming pool opening at noon, the food will be served around 1:30 p.m. and special music will be provided by Harmony Creek Junction, an award-winning bluegrass and harmony band of college students from the area, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
A free-will offering will be taken to cover the costs of the band, Berry said. The band will also have its three albums on sale that afternoon.
A vesper service at 4 p.m., under the direction of Father Chapin Engler Jr., pastor of St. Charles Borromeo parish, White Sulphur Springs, and St. Catherine of Siena parish, Ronceverte, will conclude the formal activities of the afternoon.
“Those attending are invited to bring sports equipment and board games and lawn chairs, even though the Knights will transport extra chairs and tables to the shelter area,” Berry concluded.
