Mountain State University Foundation names board members

The Mountain State University Foundation, an independent, nonprofit organization created and operated to strengthen and support the work and services of the university, has added several new members to its Board of Directors.

Board members include Roy Shrewsbury, James Songer, Elmer Coppoolse, Beckley Mayor Emmett Pugh, Jerry Rose, Abigail Greer, Jay Quesenberry, Joe Long, Cindy Alexander and Jim Silosky.

The MSU Foundation will seek private funding from individuals, corporations and grant-making foundations. Donors may contribute cash, real estate, stocks and bonds, or other private property which may be given outright or through trusts or bequests. The foundation will carefully oversee the management of the funds through investments and ensure that funds are used according to the donors’ wishes.

Songer is a local businessman who has been successful in the Beckley area for close to 30 years. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a B.S. in business management. Songer is currently serving as president of Songer Insurance Co., which has been in operation since 1978. The company specializes in commercial and residential insurance sales. He is also owner/operator of Homseekers LLC, a real estate sales and development company. In addition to serving on the MSU Foundation board, Songer is a current member of the Board of Directors for City National Bank and Beckley Rotary, and is chairman of finance for United Methodist Temple.

Glade Springs executive Elmer Coppoolse is an international hotelier with an undergraduate degree from the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne (Switzerland) and graduate degree in marketing from the Netherlands Institute of Marketing. He also studied hotel finance at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Coppoolse is presently chairman and CEO of EMCO Hospitality Inc., a hotel investment and management company with majority ownership in The Resort at Glade Springs in West Virginia and The Netherlands Inn and Spa in Pennsylvania. Prior to working with EMCO, Coppoolse held positions as a development partner and chief operating officer at SynXis Corp., president of Lancaster Hotels and Resorts and senior management positions with Sheraton Corp. and Sonesta Hotels and Resorts.
